How Masculine or Feminine Are You? 1948

Good news!  According to this 1948 pop quiz, “You can be a real he-man and still like to make a cheese soufflé.”

The article also says, “It’s no reflection on your masculinity if you are a man and sometimes prefer feminine things.  Nor should you feel dismayed if you are a woman and have some masculine tastes.”  Well that’s a relief, because I scored a 7 which supposedly means I have masculine interests.

This stuff kills me!  So funny.  What’s your score?

These vintage travel posters are begging to be framed.  After I saw them over on Brain Pickings, I couldn’t help but flip through them all.

They were created during the “Golden Age of Travel”, when new railroads were being built, luxury cruise liners started sailing across the Atlantic, and people started driving their new cars.  The ads were made to entice people by capturing the romance and adventure of traveling to a far-flung destination.  Well, it definitely worked on me.

(P.S. You can buy a book full of these globe-trotting ads right over here.)

These images from Toni Frissell make me want to bust out my vintage film cameras and start shooting with them again!  I’m especially in love with the first photo of the woman in the water.  Not just because it’s gorgeous, but also because I used to visit Weeki Wachee as a kid with my grandmother – so I have lots of fun memories from there and know exactly where this shot was taken.  When I dug a little deeper into her work, I discovered some amazing things about Toni and also fell in love with her passion and approach to photography.

She started as a fashion photographer in the ’30s for Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar.  But instead of doing the usual indoor studio shoots, she revolutionized the industry by shooting outdoors and showcasing active women.  This was a whole new concept for fashion photography back then since shoots were usually done in the studio.  In the 40′s she was a photojournalist during World War II and later became the photographer of the Women’s Army Corps.  In the 50′s she worked for Life magazine and also took photos of notable people such as John F. Kennedy and Jackie O.  On top of it all, she challenged the industry yet again by becoming the first woman staff photographer for Sports Illustrated (before the swimsuit issues).

“Here are faces that I have found memorable. If they are not all as happy as kings, it is because in this imperfect world and these hazardous times, the camera’s eye, like the eye of a child, often sees true.” – Toni Frissell

Profile: Theresa + Florence

Monday, December 6th, 2010

Wow, these are two adventurous girls that took one hell of a moto road trip.

Theresa Wallach and Florence Blenkiron were such studs.  In 1934, they rode all the way from London to Cape Town, South Africa on a motorcycle!  With only a sidecar and a trailer in tow, they tore through the Sahara desert, stayed in African villages, and faced all kinds of crazy weather and wild animals.  At one point they had to push their rig for 25 miles after a total engine failure.  Oh yeah, AND they didn’t even bring a compass.  What d’you think, could you ever ditch your GPS??

They were competitive motorcycle racers and Wallach’s parents made her hide her trophies since a woman motorcyclist was looked down upon back then in England (umm… so ridiculous).

Such an Indiana Jones vibe going on here, loveeee!  More details about their story on one of my favorite blogs, the Selvedge Yard.

Vintage Hawk-Eye Folding Camera

Tuesday, June 29th, 2010

I was going through a closet with my mom and we came across a few vintage cameras including this folding Kodak Hawk-eye Model 8 2A.  According to the interweb it was on the market from 1926 -1934.  After thorough inspection, we found it was still in great condition and ready to shoot!  Yeah!  It takes larger format photos with a film size that isn’t available in stores, so we compromised and used the next size smaller (120) and made it fit.

I took it out to the nearby bike trails covering it with a towel to avoid light leaking in.  Not sure how much it really helped, but I love the result anyway.  The shots are so big that when I wound the film, I had to skip every other number on the counter… and some of the exposures still overlapped!  So I only ended up with about 6 photos and they’re the first shots to come out of this camera prob since the 30′s or 40′s.  I would just love to know who’s portrait was taken with it back in the day.  Where were they?  What did they wear?  I can only imagine.

My new vintage addition to my camera family.

Light leaks?

Overlapping exposures and maybe a ghost?

I’m amazed how well this one turned out

You never know what you’re gonna get

Not too shabby!

I used black and white film this time, so we’ll see what we get next time with color…

These are a few more photos I’m sorting through for my parent’s 50th wedding anniversary party next saturday.  It was June 12, 1960…. Fifty years!  Yeah!

I’m so excited to celebrate with my family in Florida.  I have a big greek family and there will be lots of greek dancing going on.  Hopefully the moves will come back to me automatically like riding a bike!  OPA!

Happy Anniversary Mom and Dad!!!

Summer of 1960

Friday, April 2nd, 2010

My parents are celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary this June!  I can’t wait, we’re having a fun fancy party complete with dinner and dancing.  My mom sent me a big box full of family photos for a slide show I’m making of their past 50 years together.  I’m crazy about vintage photos and I’ve been like a kid in a candy store flipping through them all.  Although the 70′s and 80′s were fun in polyester and jelly shoes, the class and polish of the 50′s and 60′s make me want to pour some bubbly and watch a rat pack flick.

The first photo is prob my fav of all (very Sartorialist, no?).  My parents are all dressed up headed for their honeymoon right after the wedding.  I’m obsessed with their suitcases, and look….. my mom is holding gloves….. I need a good excuse to wear gloves like hers!  The second two photos are from around 1959 when they were dating in Alabama.  The last is another shot from after the wedding, getting in the car to drive off into the night.

There’s so many more good ones I’ll post as soon as I sort them out…
